iPhone comes out tomorrow evening! I think im going to get one, I am always into the newest gadgets!

So I read that at&t stores are closing in mid-afternoon and re opening 90 minutes after that to sell the iPhone only... weird launch, I didn't think it would be that big. I had to make some changes to my car wash at&t phone account today and the rep I spoke to said her office was next to an Apple store and their were people camping out last night... FOR A PHONE! I guess people did it for beanie babies years back! Why not a phone now!

Here is a picture of what my iPhone will look like, note the web site im looking at!!!

The Iphone is really good GEEKPORN. GEEK IS GOOD :)

I predict Apple`s stock going up an easy 22 1/2 points by the end of the year.

I was dead set on getting one, in fact I was going to wait in line today starting at 9am. BUT then I read last night that you cannot use the iphone as a wireless modem. Which is a total deal breaker. Also they are releasing an 80gb iphone in the fall. In the fall you will be able to rent a dvd from itunes digitally for $2.99 and the file will expire after 30 days. I think the dvd rental is suppose to help itv sales. I am waiting to get one of those as well.

So I think the 2nd gen iphone might be worth waiting for. I cried myself to sleep last night when I made the decision to wait on the iphone.

Don't understand why you need a wireless modem? Does that mean it will never pick up wire-fi? In other words, you have to pay for internet minutes all the time and it's never free?

reply by waxman about 1 year ago

Best bet here is to wait. Technology will get much better very soon and price will come down.

Yes people are camped out at the apple store in NYC. Have been for a couple days...

reply by Axxlrod about 1 year ago

Nah, life's too short to wait. Sure there will be a better version coming in the future... there always is. If you want it, get it. I am.

I believe that it can't be used as a modem to tether to your laptop and use that as the internet connection. Of course it has wi-fi to surf the web, but I think it means it can't be attached to a computer and then surf the web on the computer.

I think it's going to be very cool. Of course it has downsides... no 3G and no GPS for starters, but it will still sell like hot-cakes.

reply by SpeedyJr about 1 year ago

Dad, the phone can connect to the internet but it will not allow a computer to connect, using the phone's connection. So if I am some where without a connection for my laptop I cannot use the iphone to connect my laptop to the net (EG in a car). Many many cell phones do this. The internet doesn't count against your "minutes" and yes the iphone can connect to a wifi network for faster net speeds.

reply by SpeedyJr about 1 year ago

waxman, do you still use VHS, still waiting on dvd prices to drop? JK i know what you mean but the iphone is going to increase in price as the file storage goes up.

reply by Pastime Auto Wash about 1 year ago

I got it, when I drove by the at&t store after work there were only 5 people lined up... I could not resist!!! I love it the EDGE network is a little slow but I am sure in not too much time it will be upgraded to meet high demands of speed!!!

reply by MEP1 about 1 year ago

I doubt that prices will go up as storage increases. Remember iPods when they first came out? The biggest was 10 GB, and it retailed at $499. Then there was 20 GB for $499, then 40 GB for $499, then 60 GB for $449, and now 80 GB for $349. Technology generally improves and gets cheaper over time.

It's probable that the iPhone is only disabled for use as a wireless modem, in the same way that Verizon Wireless disables Bluetooth communication between their phones and devices such as laptops, because they want to sell their peripherals such as ecpansion memory and cables.

I'll bet most of you don't remember prices like this:

Say "NO"! to excessive compulsive consumerism.....

No, I'm not a communist, I'm taking a Dave Ramsey class and the place is full of big kids, 40 yrs old that start drooling as a Pavlovian response to the words "Best Buy". These guys are in debt up to their eyeballs. I know most of you guys can afford it, but it won't be worth jack in a couple of years.

reply by Axxlrod about 1 year ago

It won't be worth jack in a couple of years?

Who cares? So what? I don't think anyone is under the delusion that the iphone is an investment of any sort.

It's a toy. If you'll enjoy it, then buy it and do so, if not, then don't.

I might be one of the few cases where the iphone could make me money. Answering emails is a major part of my job. I send 120 emails a day.

No AOL Instant Messaging--and Yahoo and MSN IM clients, too. What about MMS support for sending picture mail?
There's no voice recording and, more importantly, no voice dialing support. How are you supposed to use an iPhone with a hands-free car kit?
It's the most locked-down phone I've ever seen. You can't swap out the AT&T SIM card for one from another network; in fact, you can't even swap it out for another AT&T SIM card.
AT&T is building out its mobile broadband network, but iPhone users are stuck with the company's older EDGE technology--or with battery-consuming Wi-Fi.
Your headphones you already own, won't work. They won't fit the iPhones headset jack, so your first iPhone accessory will have to be a bulky, ugly $10 adapter. The software keyboard invites typos--and when you're entering passwords, there's no way of telling whether you've got them right until tyou get an "access denied" prompt.
It's great that the iPhone can reorient pages in Safari, CoverFlow, and the photo album, but why not extend that capability to other apps such as e-mail? Some messages would benefit from a wide-screen display. And even when the device does reorient, it doesn't always follow through with all the attendant features: CoverFlow loses access to the volume slider, for example.
There's no support for custom ringtones--surprising in a music phone.
The camera is rudimentary, with no audio/video or even a zoom capability.
You don't get to-do list support, a basic in most calendar applications. So your right, it's a toy. And a lot of HYPE! But it has good video playback and finger tip navigation. Wonder why knowone had access to one before they came out?

reply by SpeedyJr about 1 year ago

They don't need an im client or a calendar, they opened the whole internet up to you. There are tons of web based calendar systems like google calendar etc. Several web based im clients as wel. ForgottheMilk.com and tadalist.com are great to do web based to do lists, much more robust then something Apple wishes to develop. So if anything the iphone is the most UNLOCKED device, they don't limit you to just their mobile apps. You can send pictures via any online service (pownce.com etc) or the unlimited email they give you. The keyboard has an autocorrection inline spelling checker. AT&T spent 50 million to improve their edge network just for the iphone. The 3G network sucks the battery life and the speed changes aren't noticable.

So the iphone has opened the real internet to mobile devices. So what you say, its going to pour more money to my industry (internet development). People are building web based apps just for the iphone. While the iphone at its current state isn't perfect it will push all other mobile companies, apple just raised the bar in my opinion.

reply by oldtimer about 1 year ago

Obviously your biased and can't see through the hype. The web based sites are as they are, web based and not stored in the devise. Have you thought that maybe not everyone lives around tower infested areas as yourself? Your own logic says it all. "they don't limit you to just their mobile apps. You can send pictures via any on line service". So whats all the fuss about? As I said before, the Edge network is extremely limited in MOST areas of the nation. Except in major metro areas. Big deal. What good is web based sites if you can't effectively use them? My point is, Great starting point for people in large market areas but, Apple and ATT have a long way to go. I will say it has spurred new competition in this area of technology. There is stuff coming that will knock this out of the water in a year.

You guys are beyond me...I remember programing computers in college using punch cards. When the first Tandy came out I was in awe. (That's when a floppy disk really was floppy)

Anybody got an ole 8 track that still works?

reply by Pastime Auto Wash about 1 year ago

Can't the OS on the phone be updated with itunes? Every time I sync it the phone it checks online for updates, so I figure apple can add features and software to the phone at any time, I don't feel that I bought just a phone, its a computer with an operating system that im sure will have things and different functionality added as time goes on...

reply by SpeedyJr about 1 year ago

Oldtimer, if the phone has a signal you have the internet. If you don't have a signal you have an iphone paperweight.

reply by oldtimer about 1 year ago

I don't think you realize speedy how bad the Edge network is. We are talking New technology here that is connected to old technology connect ability. If the towers are not updated, the Edge network is just a few K faster than dailup. There are huge areas that are this way. But maybe its the cats meow for urban techies. I'm not so easily impressed. PJ, I still have a second generation in the barn. I was going through some junk and came across it and just laughed. Just made me think about 30 years from now. I probably won't be around but if I am. I will do the same thing about the stuff I put in there today.

reply by waxman about 1 year ago

Haha. Yes, I still use a VHS machine for a few things!

To me, Apple is one of those companies that introduces a product then in a year it comes down in price and up in quality. I'm the type who can wait a little for less cost plus improvements.
