How do you keep from freezing?
In case of a power outage, do you keep a propane heater or something on hand to light in case of freezing conditions in your pump room?
Any instances of needing and using such a heater and whether it was effective?

I preface all my discussions about cold weather with the statement that I am in Alabama, so keep that in mind. In 93 we had a bona fide blizzard here, With accumulations of about a 12"of snow. I had just gotten into the SS business the previous Fall and learned two valuable lessons: never have a weep system operated with a normally closed solenoid, and have a source of heat available during a power outage. The freeze damage took about three days to fix.
In addition to central HVAC I usually have a wall mounted natural gas heater that requires no electricity. There are relatively inexpensive, less than $200 and use a pilot light and millivolt gas valve. During colder weather we will keep it on "one brick" and turn it up over night if the temps are to fall much below freezing.
Though extremely rare, just about any snow event here will surely bring a power outage. if we anticipate the possibility of such we will turn these units up. So far, I have had no trouble. but I don't think we've had more than an inch or so in the past five years.
Thanks! I just bought a propane heater this morning. Gotta go geta tank for it.
Portable generators work great! Today one kept our email flowing too.
What do you think about really good kerosene heaters. Or do you think propane is best.

We operate a car wash in Ontario where temperatures reach 30 below celsius. We are experiencing problems with our door freezing. We have installed a threshold heater and kerosene heater but still freezing up. Any ideas?
