Ink on leather

I've had two requests to remove ball point ink off leather. In the past, I've tried everything I could think of.

Any help out their in detail land?

Try WD 40 as a solvent. Test an area first to make sure it does not affect the dye first.

Women or mens hairspray works! Also color test on a hidden area.

there is a great product avaiable at home Depot. The brand is Mostenbach (sp) it is expensive but works well. We have been using it for several years, now it is easier to obtain. They also have one for food, blood and ink.

Be careful of some of this advise.

The leather in cars is "protected leather." That is analine leather that is not drum-dyed where the dye goes thru the hide.

Protected leather is literally painted. They call it dye, but the color is on the surface of the leather and can be removed with something like WD 40 or other paint/dye reducing chemical.

The reason hair spray works is not the hairspray but the propellant in the aerosol can which is a solvent type product. It could remove the paint/dye from the leather too.

DETAIL PLUS offers an ink removing stick that is guaranteed to remove ink from leather and vinyl.

I've tried the pens before (even Buds) and they work ok... but almost never get the ink all the way out... and still take some color out of the leather.

Just be very carefull, these seat covers cost near $300 to replace if you ruin it.
